Annual health checks

Annual Health Checks play an important role in ensuring that your pet is healthy and for detecting the early signs of disease. An email or written reminder will be sent when your pets Annual Health Check is due. This usually coincides with your pet’s vaccination requirement.

During this visit your pet will have a thorough examination and we will discuss your pet’s vaccination requirements as well as the possibility of blood and urine tests depending on your pet’s life stage. Appointments can be made Monday through to Saturday.

NURSES CLINIC

Our nurses are experienced and trained to give advice about weight management as well as nutritional counselling to help whatever life stage needs your pet may have.

In addition the nurses are able to;

  • Nail clipping

  • Remove stitches after surgery

  • Discuss dental hygiene. What to feed and how to brush. The nurses will give you advice about how to look after your pets teeth.

  • Discuss therapeutic diets

Laboratory

We have a new in-house Idexx laboratory available as well as a specialist laboratory for same day diagnosis and regular pre-surgical blood analysis.

Our new Lab enables us to have quick and reliable access to a wide range of diagnostic tests.

Lab work is an important part of pre-anaesthetic evaluation. Prior to anaesthesia, especially for patients over 6 years, we advise a complete blood count (CBC) and a chemistry that includes

  • Liver and kidney values

  • Electrolytes

  • Blood glucose

  • Thyroid hormone levels in aged patients.

Radiology
and

Our experienced veterinarians have available excellent laboratory services, ECG, digital radiology and ultrasound to better treat your pet.

Kohimarama Veterinary Clinic has both a standard size digital radiology unit as well as a digital dental unit. Along- side this we have an Ultrasound unit.

HOSPITAL

If your pet needs to be hospitalised, rest assured they will be closely monitored by our nurses in our heated hospital. Our veterinarians and nurses take the time to explain in detail pertinent information regarding the progress and care of your pet, both in the hospital and in your care at home. We provide written home care instructions and information sheets about your pet’s care and treatment.

The preferred pick up time for hospitalised patients is between 3- 6 Monday to Friday and 9-12 Saturday.

For major surgical, medical or dental cases a discharge time must be arranged for when the veterinarian treating your pet is able to speak with you.

The K Laser

Does your pet suffer from acute or chronic pain?
K-Laser treatment could help.

What is Laser therapy?
Laser therapy used different wavelengths of light (red and near infrared) to create therapeutic effects within the body.  Laser therapy treatment facilitates wounds to heal faster.  Laser therapy relieves patients of aching joints and soft tissue injuries by releasing natural pain killers and anti-inflammatories into the circulation.

What can Laser therapy treat?
Osteoarthritis, oedema and congestion, ligament sprains, muscle strains, post traumatic injury, post surgical pain, neck and back pain, hip dysplasia, burns, chronic wounds and can aid in orthopaedic recovery.

What can I expect during Laser therapy treatment?
There is no sedation or restraint required and the experience is usually pleasant and comforting for the patient.   Occasionally the patient feels mild, soothing warmth but generally little or no sensation is felt.   Treatments vary in length lasting from 5 – 15 minutes.  Most conditions require several treatments generally 3 – 8 for the greatest benefit.

surgery

The surgery is well equipped for  soft tissue surgery as well as reconstructive and exploratory surgical procedures. We regularly carry out elective surgery such as speys and castrations.

We also offer laser therapy as part of the post-surgery recuperation and post-operative recuperation.

Desexing your dog

Not only does desexing your animal help in controlling the national population and stop your dog wandering, if done at the right time is also has some health benefits as well. Studies have shown that both male and female dogs who are not desexed or desexed later in life have a higher chance of getting various diseases as they get older such as cancer. On the other side, if desexed too young a puppy’s growth can be impacted resulting in joint and bone problems later in life. We have created a flow chart that has found the ideal balance in age for desexing to give your pet the best chance in life.

PET INSURANCE

During the last 20 years veterinary knowledge and the range of treatments and surgical procedures available for pets has improved tremendously. Pets now have access to most of the same diagnostic tests and treatments available to Humans.

Specialised veterinary procedures do come at a cost and can’t always be budgeted for. Unexpected veterinary bills can be more easily managed with pet insurance. We have worked with and recommend two companies, Southerncross and Petcover.

Check out their web sites and select the pet insurance policy that best suits you and your pet. We are happy to help with recommendations.
